1. Gir
Gir is a very good milch breed and is found in the Gir hills and forests of Kathiawar comprising Junagarh, Bhavnagar and Amreli districts of Gujarat. Gir is a world-renowned breed known for its tolerance to stress conditions. It has proved its utility not only for milk but also for draught.

2. Hariana
The Hariana is a prominent dual-purpose breed of Northern India. The home tract of this breed is Rohtak, Hissar-Jind and Gurgaon districts of Haryana. It is also one of the most widely spread cattle breed in the Indo-Gangetic plains.

3. Ongole
The Ongole, the dual purpose cattle breed belongs to the short-horned group of zebus that were brought by Aryans into India and further to the Indo-Gangetic plains and towards South along Godavari, Krishna and Pennar basins. The Ongole’s hardiness, disease resistance and its capacity to thrive on scanty and dry fodder have been quite successfully exploited for improving and upgrading the local stock of European origin.

4. Rathi
The Rathi is a medium sized important milch breed of cattle found in the Bikaner, Ganganagar and Jaisalmer district of western Rajasthan.

5. Red Sindhi
An important dairy cattle breed of the Indian subcontinent and found in Karachi and Hyderabad districts of Pakistan. Some organized herds of this breed are found in states of Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Kerala and Assam.

6. Sahiwal
This is one of the best dairy breeds of zebu cattle in India. The origin of this breed is in Montgomery district of Pakistan but herds of this breed are found along the Indo-Pak border in Ferozepur and Amritsar districts of Punjab and Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan.

7. Tharparkar
The Tharparkar is an important dual-purpose breed raised primarily for its milking potential. The name Tharparkar has been derived from the place of its origin – the Thar desert. In India, these animals are now found along the Indo-Pak border, covering Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer districts of western Rajasthan up to the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat.
